The John Sterling JS-1135 window guards feature security bars that are 18 inches high to protect up to 22 inches. These guards have an expansion range of 24 to 42 inches and are constructed with warm white powder-coated steel. Included with the guards are a locking channel with a locking hole, a locking pin, mounting screws, and a safety release lever. The swing-open design allows for escape in an emergency, but the unit is not removable except by drilling out the screws.

These window guards are suitable for use in both sleeping and non-sleeping rooms. The bar spacing is 3.5 inches, exceeding the recommended 4-inch safety standard for child window bars. The bar diameter is 5/16th inch, and the guards have been tested to withstand a force of up to 150 pounds at the maximum extended width.

The window guards can be installed horizontally or vertically to protect double-hung, slider, or casement windows from intruders or children falling from the windows. Vertical or horizontal stacking is possible for larger windows. Once installed, the guards can be removed by drilling out all the screws.

The John Sterling JS-1135 window guards can be mounted either recessed or surface-mounted. They are made in China for Knape and Vogt, and the manufacturer provides a limited warranty that covers the replacement of any part found to be defective in material or workmanship.

It is important to note that users should check with their local building inspection department for window guard requirements in their area. For non-sleeping room windows, the BK-1130 series fixed-mount window security guards are recommended. While the Sterling Child and Window Security Guards can discourage illegal intruders when properly installed, no protection is absolute, and a determined criminal may still be able to defeat any barrier given enough time and tools.

The installation requirements state that the guards should only be installed in solid, non-rotting window tracks. The guard should be expanded to fit the window securely.
